EXTEMPORE: For digital storytellers
"We are lonesome animals. We spend all of our life trying to be less lonesome. One of our ancient methods is to tell a story begging the listener to say-and to feel- ‘Yes, that is the way it is, or at least that is the way I feel it.’ You’re not as alone as you thought." -John Steinbeck

4-minute digital story
My second digital story, Running with the Tide, is a personal freind's account of her experience as the mother of an autistic son. At the request of the family, I have posted the video on YouTube with limited access; if you are a member of the Psychology & Media of Story KA and would like to view the video, please email me and I'll be glad to put you on the list of viewers.
Reflection: Creative Challenges
In producing my second digital story I was faced with a few unexpected obstacles. Weather conditions had prevented me from being able to videotape my interview with Kim, the subject of the story, on the beach as we’d initially planned, so we had to return later to shoot footage of her walking along the shore. Since I’d also recorded separate audio files as a backup this should have been fine, but I learned the hard way that if you turn the camera (this particular one, at least) vertically when you’re shooting, the image is 90 degrees off when you download it (thus Kim was lying across the bottom of my screen covered in a blanket of water). No problem; I searched for, and found, a free program that promised to rotate the video – and it did, but it didn’t allow me to adjust the aspect ratio to fit the Movie Maker screen. I finally decided to convert the images from the video to still shots and lay the audio track separately.

Script/Treatment
Four-minute Video: A Mother’s Perspective on
Raising an Autistic Child
(Note: this is the topic of my digital story. As of this posting, I haven't decided on a title; I'm hoping it will emerge from the content when it's in the editing stages.)

In Becoming an Expert: Lessons From the Ring, I chose to focus on my work experience as an aspect of my life that contributes a sense of purpose and meaning to my “self-story.” By drawing on my boxing training to highlight principles I’ve embraced in my profession, I employed a motivational theme relevant for anyone interested in self-improvement. The story reveals an aspect of my life – as I see it – that addresses an issue most people are concerned with in one way or another at some point in their lives. “The science of teaching is knowing a number of different methodologies. The art is knowing when to use which.” –Jason Ohler, Taming the Beast: Choice and Control in the Electronic Jungle
I love this quote from Jason's book Taming the Beast. It captures an important aspect of what I've tried to convey in my first digital story, Becoming an Expert -- that knowledge and skills, while critical to our success in any endeavor, are only part of the equation. Understanding a specific situation and what it demands of us requires us to be intimately familiar with what has been said and done in the past, and wide open to all of the possibilities of the future.

Script/Treatment for My First Digital Story
Becoming an Expert: Lessons From the Ring
I chose to combine my script and treatment (how it will look on video) because it gives me a clear outline for producing my digital story and is suitable to a piece of this length. The script includes my own actual speaking lines. For my boxing instructor, Warren Dreyfus, I’ve included only interview questions; his speaking parts will be edited from the audio recording…
